Hurricane Season Is Coming: A Gulf Coast Homeowner’s Home Hardening Checklist
April 19, 2026by Tremayne LewisRepairs
Hurricane season officially starts June 1, but if you’re a homeowner on the Gulf Coast, late April is exactly when you want to start preparing — not the week a storm is bearing down on Gulfport. Every year we get calls from homeowners scrambling to fix things that could have been taken care of months earlier. This year, let’s get ahead of it. Here’s what we recommend checking off before the season gets going.
1. Start on the Roof
Your roof is your first and most important line of defense against a hurricane. Loose or missing shingles, cracked flashing around chimneys and vents, and deteriorating sealant around pipe boots can all become major problems once high winds and heavy rain arrive. A pre-season inspection lets you catch and fix small issues before they turn into interior water damage. Pay special attention to the edges and ridgeline — those are the spots where wind gets its grip. If your roof is 15 years or older, it’s worth having a professional take a close look.
2. Clean and Inspect Your Gutters and Downspouts
Gulf Coast storms can drop several inches of rain in just a few hours. If your gutters are packed with debris from the spring, that water has nowhere to go except over the side — and eventually toward your foundation. Before hurricane season, clear out all gutters and check that every downspout is draining water at least 4 to 6 feet away from your home. Also inspect the gutters themselves for sagging, loose hangers, or separating seams. A gutter that pulls away from the fascia during a storm can do real damage to your roofline and siding.
3. Walk Your Property and Identify Wind Hazards
Take a slow lap around your yard with fresh eyes. Overhanging tree branches — especially over your roof or near power lines — are one of the most common sources of storm damage on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Have large limbs trimmed back now, while tree services aren’t booked solid. Also look at anything that could become a projectile: loose fence panels, unsecured patio furniture, propane tanks, decorative yard items. During a storm, these become missiles. Plan now for where you’ll store or secure them.
4. Check Your Windows, Doors, and Garage Door
Windows and exterior doors are vulnerable points in any storm. Inspect weatherstripping and caulking around every opening — gaps let wind and water in and can compromise the pressure envelope of your home. If you have storm shutters, test them now to make sure every panel is accounted for and the hardware works smoothly. Your garage door deserves special attention: it’s often the largest opening on a home and one of the most likely to fail in high winds. Many older garage doors can be reinforced with a bracing kit, which is a smart investment if yours hasn’t been upgraded.
5. Test Your Generator and Backup Systems
If you have a standby or portable generator, now is the time to run it — not when the power goes out. Change the oil, check the fuel, and make sure it starts reliably. If you don’t have a generator and are thinking about getting one, the window before hurricane season is the right time; inventory gets tight fast once a named storm forms in the Gulf. Also check your sump pump if you have one, test your smoke and CO detectors, and make sure you know where your main water shutoff is located in case of pipe damage.
Get Ready Before the Season Starts
The homeowners who come through hurricane season in the best shape are almost always the ones who started preparing in the spring. A few hours of maintenance now can save you thousands of dollars in repairs later — and a lot of stress when a storm is on the way.
